When two departments shared a trip: how Market Weighton School’s combined French and drama visit to Paris led to unexpected learning and friendships.

With fewer students signing up for the traditional French trip, MFL teacher, Janie Gilbert, saw an opportunity to join forces with her colleague Vikki O’Malley, Head of Creative Arts.

“When numbers were lower than expected, we started thinking about ways to make the trip work differently — and that’s when the idea of combining subjects developed.”

The result? A combined French and Drama school trip to Paris that maximised participation and gave students unique experiences, not available on a single-subject trip. Combining subjects like this not only made the trip feasible and most cost-effective but also enriched students’ academic and personal development.

A tailored itinerary for French and Drama students in Paris

With the help of Voyager School Travel, the itinerary was carefully designed to ensure both subjects were properly covered. Separate activities were planned for the French and drama students to hone in on their subject, as well as some quality time to bond as a group.

On the first day, the French learners explored Parisian attractions with their animatrice, Louise, practising conversational French in real-life situations.

At the same time, the Drama students took part in professional workshops and sessions with examiners at the annual GCSE Drama Convention, helping them prepare for written and practical exams.

A blend of fun and cultural experiences

The following day, the whole group came together at Disneyland Paris to experience the park and watch a live performance of The Lion King - a highlight for both sets of students.

The trip concluded with a tour of Paris' iconic landmarks, including the Eiffel Tower and a Seine river cruise, giving students a rich and memorable view of the City of Light.

The combined itinerary gave every student the chance to develop subject-specific skills while enjoying the cultural and educational benefits of an overseas school trip.

Professional & organisational support

A major factor in the trip’s success was the support from Voyager’s team - both in the planning stages and while in Paris.

The structured drama curriculum workshops, led by industry professionals, allowed the drama staff to enjoy the trip alongside their students.

While the French learners benefitted from a full-time animatrice throughout their time in Paris, who led activities and excursions entirely in French, keeping the language alive and engaging.

“They don’t feel like tour guides or add-ons — they feel like part of our school."

With Voyager's full-time support throughout their time in Paris, the teachers from Market Weighton School could concentrate on their group's well-being rather than logistics. By sharing a full-time coach and driver, they had more time to explore Paris.

Unexpected benefits

Combining departments brought together students who might not normally mix, fostering collaboration and creating new skills and friendships that extended beyond the classroom.

(And, the Drama students also picked up some French during the trip!)

“What’s also lovely is that our drama students are picking up French while they’re here. They’re learning new skills and building lasting friendships.”

The teachers also found opportunities to share ideas across departments, blending curriculum approaches and creating lasting professional connections.

A successful model for future school trips

The first combined French and drama trip to Paris proved an undeniable success. By taking students from both subjects, The Market Weighton School created a shared experience that went beyond traditional classroom teaching. Students gained academic skills, cultural knowledge, and lifelong memories — proving that creative, well-planned school trips can inspire and transform learning.
