How language immersion school trips work

Our immersive approach transforms passive language learners into active participants

At Voyager, we believe the best way to learn a language is to use it every day, in real-life situations. That’s why all our centre-based programmes are built on the principle of language immersion where students only hear, speak and see the target language for the duration of their stay.

"French has a purpose and is useful" Chlotilde, Animatrice at Château de la Baudonnière

Language immersion isn’t about formal lessons — it’s about surrounding students with the target language in every part of their day so that communication becomes natural and rewarding.

Our native-speaking instructors, called animateurs (France), Betreuers (Germany) and monitores (Spain), ensure that every excursion, activity and mealtime is conducted in the target language, without switching back to English.

“The students’ vocabulary also expanded significantly over the course of the trip, covering topics from watersports to food and everyday questions.” Teacher feedback

A genuine opportunity to learn a language by living it

Voyager’s immersive language programmes for schools deliver more educational outcomes:

  • Curriculum-aligned - our programmes are designed to support the national curriculum for languages.
  • Provide maximum language use - for example, a week at Château de la Baudonnière exposes learners to more French than a whole term of lessons back at school.
  • 86% report progress in confidence and understanding - feedback from teachers shows that this continuous interaction develops students’ vocabulary, comprehension and practical understanding that carry back into school.
  • Fun, supportive environment – using 20+ years of experience, we create safe settings where even the most reticent learners can communicate without fear of making a mistake.

Teachers describe it as “learning without realising you’re learning” — students quickly start to recognise patterns, pick up vocabulary and gain the courage to speak. They stop worrying about mistakes and start focusing on meaning. By the end of the week, even shy or reluctant pupils are asking for food, joining in conversations and using the phrases they’ve heard over and over.

“They felt genuinely proud of themselves for being able to communicate effectively in Spanish and realised that they could do so without embarrassment.” Teacher feedback

An immersive approach that is for all levels and all ages

Our instructors model clear, simple language supported by gestures, repetition and cognates that help every child understand and participate, from year 6 to sixth form.

“The staff are native French and unyielding in their use of French with the children... So pleased we brought year 7 to the Moulin. The immersion aspect (along with everything else) was fantastic and the children gained so much confidence and knowledge from the trip." MFL teacher, Pinewood School

Complements your classroom teaching

By taking students out of the school setting and into a fully immersive environment, learners can:

  • Apply what they’ve learned in a real-world context
  • Gain motivation for learning a language by seeing its practical value
  • Develop cultural awareness through managed interactions with the local community
  • Build confidence that lasts long after the trip ends

Our trips don’t replace classroom teaching — they give students opportunities to practise and consolidate their skills in a supportive, authentic setting. And it works! In a recent study, MFL teachers confirmed that our approach had a positive impact on their students.

“Having a safe environment to learn French is invaluable to help them feel positive about learning languages.” Teacher feedback

Beware of imitations!

We’ve noticed how some travel companies throw in a language lesson and call it "language immersion"But we believe that true immersion is so much more than just a lesson. It’s about learning a language by living it, from breakfast to bedtime.
