This school trip to Cologne’s Christmas markets offers an engaging mix of German language, culture, history and festive fun. Students will uncover centuries of history at the iconic Cologne Cathedral, learn about the evolution of chocolate at the Lindt Chocolate Museum, and have the chance to try out their German at the city’s many Christmas markets.

The itinerary also includes ice skating and an optional day at Phantasialand, providing a perfect blend of education and festive fun.

When to visit the Cologne Christmas markets?

The Christmas markets in Cologne tend to open their gates in the last two weeks of November. There are several markets across the city that offer a variety of activities, including carousels, ice skating, shopping, and delicious local food and drinks.

Itinerary

Day 1 – Travel to Cologne

  • Early morning departure from school by coach

  • Ferry crossing from Dover to Calais

  • Continue to Cologne

  • Check in to your accommodation and enjoy your evening meal

Day 2 – Cologne & Christmas Markets

  • Visit the KölnTriangle viewing platform for 360° views of the city (pay locally)

  • Sightseeing in Cologne, including the Cathedral, Hohenzollern Bridge and the banks of the Rhine River

  • Explore Cologne’s seven festive Christmas markets – ideal for practising German and trying seasonal treats - and ice skating 

  • Visit the Lindt Chocolate Museum

  • Evening meal at the accommodation, followed by bowling

Day 3 – Bruges & Return Journey

  • Breakfast at the accommodation

  • Begin your return journey to the UK

  • En route, stop in the beautiful medieval city of Bruges for some festive sightseeing

  • Ferry crossing from Calais to Dover

  • Evening arrival back at school
