Paul Gilbert, School Chaplain, St Alban’s Catholic High School in Ipswich
In the Catholic Church's Jubilee Year 2025, students from St Alban’s Catholic High School travelled to Rome on a five-day Religious Studies and cultural visit that blended faith, history and some unforgettable experiences. Led by School Chaplain Paul Gilbert and supported by Voyager School Travel, students took part in a once-in-a-lifetime visit, including an audience with Pope Leo XIV.
“The Catholic Church in 2025 is celebrating a Jubilee Year, which occurs every 25 years. Pope Francis invited the world’s faithful to visit a place of pilgrimage during the Jubilee Year of Hope. It also marked the launch of our school’s 60th anniversary of educating young people in Suffolk.” Paul Gilbert
Paul aimed to engage students in the historical, spiritual and social dimensions of Rome while helping them experience faith in communion with the global Church. Voyager’s Tour Coordinator, Lucia, managed the logistics and itinerary to allow staff to focus on the educational and pastoral elements of the trip.
The four-night trip packed in unforgettable experiences as part of the Jubilee of Hope, including a tour of the classic historical sights of Rome, including the Colosseum, major basilicas and the Spanish Steps, as well as a gelato-making class.
The highlight of the pilgrimage was a visit to the Vatican, where the students attended a papal audience where Pope Leo XIV personally greeted a number of students, shaking hands and formally blessing the school’s prayer.
