Northern France School Trips: My Visit to Calais, Chantilly and Parc Astérix

When most people think about school trips to France, Paris usually steals the spotlight. But during a recent school travel familiarisation trip through Northern France, I was reminded that some of the most rewarding educational experiences can be found before you even reach the capital.
Travelling from Calais towards Paris, I discovered a fantastic mix of culture, language immersion and curriculum-linked attractions that would make excellent additions to any school trip itinerary. If you're wondering where school groups can visit in Northern France, or looking for the best educational stopovers between Calais and Paris, here are some of the highlights from the journey.
Educational Benefits of Visiting Calais
Far more than just a port, Calais is an excellent place to break up a journey to or from Paris. One of the first attractions on the itinerary was the Dragon de Calais. Watching this giant mechanical dragon move along the seafront was an unforgettable experience. The scale and engineering behind the attraction immediately stood out, offering fascinating links to design, innovation and technology.
Our first visit was the impressive Cité de la Dentelle et de la Mode, one of the last surviving examples of the collective lace factories that made Calais famous in the 19th century. Still a working production site today, the museum introduces visitors to current collaborations with leading fashion houses.
During a guided tour in French, supported by a translator, we learned how the world-renowned Calais lace is made. The museum itself is highly interactive and engaging, making it a fantastic visit for students studying French or Art & Design
For schools looking for educational attractions near Calais, the city is far more than a convenient arrival point—it can be a worthwhile destination in its own right.
Why Chantilly Is Perfect for French Language Immersion
Travelling further south, we arrived in Chantilly, around 90 minutes from central Paris. For groups looking to experience a different side of France beyond the capital, Chantilly offers a charming regional alternative and can easily be visited as a day trip from the capital.
The magnificent Château de Chantilly, once home to the Duc d'Aumale, son of the last King of France, provides beautiful grounds and plenty of space to explore. My personal highlight was the Great Stables, where horses still perform daily equestrian displays.
Overlooking the show ring, we took part in a fascinating Chantilly cream workshop led by a member of La Confrérie des Chevaliers Fouetteurs de Crème Chantilly, the guardians of authentic Chantilly cream. Guided in simple French with support from a translator, we learned the traditional method of whipping cream using a chilled metal bowl. Everyone had the chance to make their own before choosing toppings and flavours. It was a genuinely fun, hands-on activity suitable for all ages and particularly valuable for students on a French language trip.
With its stunning grounds, equestrian heritage and unique workshop experiences, Chantilly makes an excellent day excursion from Paris or a perfect stop between Paris and Calais.
Day Trip from Paris for School Groups: Parc Astérix
Located just outside Paris, the park is one of the most popular day trips for school groups, and after visiting, it's easy to see why.
While the rides are undoubtedly a major draw, there is also a strong cultural element woven throughout the experience. Based on the famous French comic book characters Astérix and Obélix, the park introduces visitors to an important part of French popular culture.
Throughout the park, guests are immersed in French language signage, themed environments and cultural references, creating an engaging setting that complements a wider French language or cultural school trip to Paris.
The combination of entertainment, culture and language immersion makes Parc Astérix an excellent addition to a school trip itinerary and a memorable way to conclude a tour in Northern France.
Why Northern France Works So Well for School Trips
Each destination brought something unique to the experience. Calais provided a fascinating introduction to French culture and innovation. Chantilly offered rich opportunities for historical and cultural exploration. Parc Astérix combined language immersion with an engaging introduction to French popular culture.
Together, they showcase the variety of educational experiences available between Calais and Paris and highlighted why Northern France remains such a valuable destination for school travel.
So, if you're planning a school trip to France and searching for the best educational stopovers between Calais and Paris, wondering where school groups can visit in Northern France, or looking for inspiring day trips from Paris, these destinations deserve a place on your itinerary.
