Home to eleven official languages, many different ethnic groups, spectacular landscapes and an array of wildlife in its natural habitat, South Africa has earnt its reputation as the "Rainbow Nation".
Discover the Drakensberg Mountains, South Africa’s highest mountain range, Cape Towns Table Mountain, see the scorched red earth of the Kalahari Desert and breathe in the fresh ocean air around the Cape of Good Hope to the south or visit the lush green valleys of Swaziland
There is plenty of opportunities to see wildlife during your trip: whether that’s spotting the big five with our expert ranger in the Kruger National Park, catching the baboons at play at the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve or a chance encounter with a whale at Plettenberg Bay.
History students can gain a fascinating insight into South Africa's troubled past and the end of the apartheid regime, the fragile harmony which exists now and the challenges of a multicultural society. Take your pupils to the District Six Museum which provides a touching reconstruction of the township from which 60,000 inhabitants were forcibly removed under the 1970s apartheid regime or take a boat trip to Robben Island to see where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 of his 27 years in captivity.
Boulders Beach is famous as the only place on earth you can get up close and personal with a colony of African Penguins! They’ve made their home on the beautiful white sandy beach which is also a great spot for swimming and there’s a visitor centre when students can learn about the penguins.
The Flying Dutchman Funicular is an exciting way to see the sights of Cape Point. Your ride takes you through dense foliage and fynbos before disembarking at the lighthouse at the summit with expansive views of the Atlantic Ocean.
This 17th-century fort is recognised as the most well-preserved example of architecture from its era in the entire world. There are three museums inside showcasing South Africa’s military history, colonial history and art and ceramics.
Take a guided historical walking tour where your students will learn about the effects of apartheid in South Africa, including a visit to District Six Museum and Langa Township where black citizens were resigned to during the apartheid era.
Take a 45 minute round trip on a boat to observe the seals in their natural habitat. You’ll see seals by the hundreds diving, splashing around or sunbathing!
The Company’s Garden is a green oasis in the centre of Cape Town and is a popular spot for locals and street performers. Besides the greenery, the garden is home to the South African National Gallery, the South African Museum and the Cape Town Holocaust Centre where students can get a better understanding of the country’s history.
Take a ferry to Robben Island, home to the prison where Nelson Mandela famously spent the first 18 years of his 27-year sentence. Learn about the island’s 500-year history and visit its quarries, bunkers, prison and see Mandela’s cell.
Drive by South African Parliament, City Hall and the colourful former township of Bo-Kaap, which has a history of slavery.
