Ancient civilisations, historic ruins, colonial architecture and tropical landscapes
Peru is an excellent educational destination for pupils studying History, Geography or looking for a cross-curricular experience. Its dense jungle, tropical coastline, Andes Mountains, ancient ruins, architecture, rich history and vibrant culture present endless learning opportunities.
If you want an insight into how the Americas were before the Europeans landed, and then Peru is a good place to start. The 15th-century Incan Empire, at its height, stretched along the east coast of South America, from Columbia as far down to midway through Ecuador, but its centre was in modern-day Peru. It has many remnants of its ancient Inca civilisation such as Machu Picchu and the Incan capital Cusco where you’ll find the memorable sacred valley of the Incas.
Tours begin in the modern capital of Peru, Lima where you will explore the colonial architecture of the UNESCO recognised historic centre. Lima has a burgeoning contemporary art scene with plenty of galleries, trendy shops and restaurants to enjoy.
From Lima, we visit the mummy of Juanita in Arequipa, who was sacrificed to the Incan gods half a millennium ago but has been extraordinarily well-preserved due to the cold and high altitude of her original resting place on Mount Ampato. From there we visit Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley of the Incas at Cusco, the jewels in the Incan crown. We can also include a visit to Lake Titicaca, a train ride along the Urubamba River and a dip in the hot spring at Calientes.
A school tour of Peru is an amazing experience that will allow your students, whatever their key stage or subject, to look through a window into the past and see evidence of a civilisation untouched by Europeans. Along the way, they will see an amazing landscape and soak up the distinct culture, music and vibe that makes Peru such a unique destination.
