Spanish Language Immersion School Trips to Murcia, Spain

Our Spanish Language Immersion Centre, Arbolar on the Mar Menor

The Arbolar Centre offers a total language immersion experience in typically Spanish sunny surroundings. The emphasis is on learning Spanish outside the traditional classroom environment and combines language learning with engaging cultural experiences and fun activities. Your group will be accompanied by Arbolar's team of trained native Spanish-speaking ‘monitores’, who will effectively lead your trip.

The monitores challenge and encourage students to use their Spanish speaking and listening skills as much as possible on every activity and excursion, giving students the exciting opportunity to use their Spanish skills in real life situations, conversing and engaging with real Spanish speakers. Monitores also lead an engaging programme of evening activities on-site, keeping your students learning, occupied and entertained all day and giving teachers a chance to take a breather.

Activities and Learning

The Region of Murcia offers an interesting and varied range of visits to experience Spanish culture at its best. A typical itinerary includes a Spanish taught cookery lesson creating a famous local dish, a structured guided visit to a local market where students can interact with stallholders and practice their language skills, and an instructed watersports session using the centre’s fleet of boats. On an excursion to historic Cartagena, students will follow a guided and interactive town trail, or at Salinas de San Pedro they will explore the landscape, observe the local wildlife and even bathe in the natural mud baths!

Evenings at Arbolar are seen as an opportunity to have fun and unwind from the day's activities while still practising Spanish. Monitores will organise and lead evening activities such as Spanish music games and team sports.

Each student will receive a workbook to complete on the trip, complementing the activities on offer and reinforcing the language learning. Before each activity, the monitor will fully explain what the group will be doing and which vocabulary will be required and encourage students to speak Spanish at all times to build their confidence and skill.

Who is This School Trip Perfect For?

The Spanish Language immersion programme at Arbolar can be tailored to suit every learner, from year 6 right up to sixth form students. The centre’s monitores are adept at gauging the language levels of their group and modifying the programme accordingly to ensure that students grow in confidence and are kept engaged and learning at all times.

Generally, groups will stay at the centre for 4 or 5 days to make the most out of the programme and get the best value for money.

When Should I Take My School Trip to Spain?

The Murcia region is well linked by airlines and groups can fly from most UK airports. Often the overall price of the trip is dependent on flight prices, so if groups can be flexible on when they travel it may make a considerable difference. Our top tip is to avoid the peak months between June and July to get the best value for money and to ensure availability for your group. The monitores will use their local expertise to organise the most suitable activities for the time of year you are visiting.

Travelling in the autumn term gives students a valuable head start with their Spanish language skills and gives them confidence for the school year ahead. Whilst a spring term trip will give your group a pre-exam boost and keep students enthusiastic and stimulated. The good news is you're likely to soak up the Spanish sun whenever you travel, as the temperature averages 27 degrees in January to 29 degrees from May to August.

Sample excursions

Cartagena is an historical city that has maintained its strength and power because of its much coveted defensive port, which has remained one of the most important in the western Mediterranean. The confluence of civilisations as well as its strategic harbour, together with the rise of the local mining industry has resulted in the culmination of an unique artistic heritage, with a number of landmarks such as the Roman Theatre, and a plethora of Art Nouveau buildings that came out of the bourgeoisie settlements in the early 20th century. The visit is supported by a workbook with vocabulary, grammar and exercises.

Murcia is a popular university town, which makes it ideal for younger groups. Highlights for visitors include the Cathedral, a number of beautiful baroque buildings, renowned local cuisine, works of art by the famous Murcia sculptor Francisco Salzillo, and the celebrated Spring Festival.

San Pedro Nature Reserve

San Pedro Nature Reserve & Mud Bath

Students use vocabulary found in their workbook, related to nature and the environment as they enjoy a guided walk through the nature reserve at San Pedro, where they will see the famous salt flats and the flamingoes in the wild. The group will need to take towels and flip-flops as there is a popular mud bath experience to finish off the excursion.

"Just a quick note to say a huge thank you for arranging a brilliant trip to France last week. Staff and children alike had a really enjoyable time in Paris and learned a lot. The programme was busy and I feel we made good use of our time there and achieved a great balance between work and rest. Juju's involvement was hugely appreciated by me and by the children. He is a fantastic animateur, he's got so much energy and I was pleased that he insisted on high standards of the children's French." Anna Rippe, Head of French, Thomas's Fulham
