Windmills, cheese, clogs of course, but there's so much more to see...

Whilst the Netherlands may be small in size, it makes up for it in the character of it's larger than life natives who are probably the most relaxed and welcoming across Europe.

With nearly a fifth of the land area reclaimed from the sea, you'd imagine that commerce, industry and agriculture to be compromised by the nations size, far from it. Unbelievably, the Netherlands is the world's second-largest exporter of food and agricultural products, after the United States, and this is reflected in the status of Rotterdam, up until 2004 the largest port in the world when it was surpassed by Shanghai.

With beautiful open countryside peppered with windmills, dykes, canals and vast tulip fields, stereotypes of Dutch culture and life abound, but a school tour to the Netherlands will prove a richly rewarding one, with contrasts and stories of empire, pioneering global trade through to achingly contemporary art and philosophy, Holland is a treasure trove of sights and experiences.

If your school trip to Holland is designed to spend 2 days or more in Amsterdam then plan your time there wisely, there is such a fantastic variety of things to do, luckily the city isn't so spread out that concentrated daily itineraries cannot be achieved.

If its an Art focused school trip, it's feasible you could spend 2 whole days in galleries without a break...starting with the Rijksmuseum to see Rembrandt and other Dutch masters, then Van Gogh, Stedelijk, Modern Art and even the Hermitage, an outpost of the original St Petersburg museum, opened in 2009.
