Teacher on a mission

16 Sept 2014, 12:28

Deputy head and geography teacher Matthew Bell loves to travel and he's on a mission to get his pupils exploring the world too. The inspirational teacher is a real globetrotter. He's already notched up 55 countries but is determined to visit every country in the world. He reckons that his lust for travel and adventure inspires his pupils to do the same. Anything that gets young people interested in travel and school trips is a winner with Voyager School Travel so we are with Matthew all the way!

Matthew's wanderlust kicked off at university with inter-railing trips around Europe. After college and a few years in banking he decided to become a geography teacher. His aim was to pack as much travel as possible into the holidays and return to school with tales to tell and photographs of his amazing journeys. Matthew explains: "I wanted to sell geographical learning, instead of using secondary resources, such as textbooks or the internet, I thought there was no better way to do that than by seeing and experiencing the things I teach about first hand."

The idea has really caught on with his students. The lessons are more entertaining and engaging. What is more; Matthew encourages his kids to organise and plan their own school trips overseas. Matthew explained in an interview with the Guardian: "My students have been the driving force behind over 50 educational trips abroad. We started 12 years ago in the Netherlands and then went to Dubai. Now we are going to India in October. I give the kids free rein to organise the trips, as long as it is within our syllabus."

Matthew's innovative teaching technique has paved the way for his geography students to get more involved and interested in the subject. And, who knows where this will lead them in life? At Voyager we really believe that travel broadens the mind and experience unlocks the door to future success.
